Since 1909 the tradition of boarding has played an important role in the life of Brisbane Boys’ College. Today, we provide boarding facilities for up to 150 students from Years 7 to 12.

A snapshot of boarding life at BBC

Our Residential Curriculum

It is here in our Boarding House that boys from all corners of the globe enjoy the camaraderie that boarding at Brisbane Boys’ College affords, building lifelong friendships as they immerse themselves in the academic, sporting, co-curricular, service and cultural offerings of our school, located just 5km from Brisbane CBD.

Our ability to care for and educate a boy depends on our ability to connect with him, and to provide individual academic and personal support as an extension of the home. Our residential curriculum provides intentional learning opportunities for boarders across a myriad of both life and learning experiences, developing their academic skills alongside life skills, teamwork and resilience to see them emerge as competent, independent young men.

Along with a comprehensive recreational, cultural and wellbeing program, all boarders are supported in their academic development as experienced teachers facilitate the evening academic program, with year-level or subject-specific tutorials also made available. Nightly supervised Prep is compulsory for all boarders and the College makes available additional staff members and tutors who, along with the Boarding House staff, provide assistance across most key subject areas.

Outside of school hours, boarders enjoy liberal access to the many fine recreational facilities of the College. This includes the ovals, tennis courts, library, multi-games courts and weights area of the Barbara Helen Thomson Sports Complex, swimming pool and the outstanding music facilities of College Hall.

When you walk through the gates of BBC as a boarder, you will come to realise this place is more than just a school – it is your home. The boys that sit beside you aren’t your classmates; they are your brothers. Miskin Oval is not a field to you; it is your backyard.

Care & Support

Living away from home can be challenging, yet living on campus allows boarders to embrace a strong sense of brotherhood as they are supported to immerse themselves in programs tailored to extend their classroom learning, encourage leadership opportunities and support their social and emotional wellbeing.

The unique size of our boarding house enables our teaching, residential and medical staff to forge authentic relationships with each boy. Boarding Coordinators, Resident Masters, College Chaplain, onsite School Counsellors and Senior Students on duty offer additional care and support. Registered Nurses also liaise with doctors who have had extensive experience working with our boarders.

Comforts of Home

All boys have their own private living and study area. In Year 12, they generally enjoy their own private study bedrooms. Common rooms provide indoor entertainment including Foxtel enabled flat-screen TVs, board games, table tennis etc. Our boarders enjoy nutritionally balanced and tasty meals prepared by our onsite chefs each day. Special dietary needs are also catered for by our staff.

Leave can be requested by boarders or their parents through the ‘REACH’ online system. Parental approval is required.

Brisbane Boys’ College is a Member of the Australian Boarding Schools Association and upholds the National Boarding Standards for Australian Schools. The standards covers a wide range of aspects of boarding, such as child protection policies and requirements, student safety, health and general wellbeing, personal development, supervision and catering for special needs.
