Objectives & Achievements
Birtles Library in the BBC Resource Centre is the Information Hub of our College Campus. Our traditional values, begun in the old Birtles Library, of "The Greatest Good for the Greatest Number" and "the creation of a welcoming environment in which our boys will thrive" are as central to all our endeavours now as then, although the environment and the world of information itself has changed dramatically.

Objectives (Library Operational Plan)
Our Library staff work as a team to create an annual Operational Plan, which outlines our objectives and becomes our modus operandi for the year. The main objectives of the Library Operational Plan are as follows:
- Library staff working with teachers as active partners in students' education
- Working with parents as active partners in their sons' education
- Library as key player in integration of subjects/themes across curriculum
- Differentiation in resources for students of varying abilities
- Updating and improving Library Information Management Systems
- Extending and maintaining student-centred, educational learning experiences from Prep through to Year 12
- Maintaining safe, orderly and engaging first-class learning environments in the Library
- Maintaining personalised and efficient administration and education services
- Student welfare - working to ensure Library technology and facilities comply with BBC Computer and Internet usage policy, Workplace Health and Safety Policy
- Staff welfare - maintaining a climate of caring for self and others
- Library as an integral part of the BBC school experience for staff, students and parents
- Smooth transitions to each stage of education
- Encouraging students to be actively involved in College life
- Building strong communications with all staff and staffing levels within BBC community
- Building strong links with our wider community
- Maintaining professional customer service and ensuring it meets the needs of BBC and the wider community
Achievements
Our achievements over the years show how our Library is meeting the objectives of its annual Operational Plans. it is of the greatest importance to us that every BBC boy will achieve to the best of his ability in his time at the College and beyond. The Library has a significant part to play in this.
Library achievements include:-
- Maintaining a safe, stimulating and encouraging learning environment in the Library
- Continually improving our Middle School Wide Reading Program to encourage reading widely across both fiction and non-fiction, and across genres of fiction
- Integrating of units of work between subjects to heighten students' learning experiences
- Continuing to build and maintain an excellent resource Collection, both print and digital
- Continuing to improve access to information, both print and digital

- Liaison with Year 6 teachers to ease transition from Junior Library to Senior Library, and Junior School to Senior School
- Annual visits to Literary Festivals. Year 7 visit to Somerset Celebration of Literature

- Author visits. Ken Catran visited BBC from New Zealand
- Stimulating displays of library resources and current affairs
- Veterans' Day
- Bastille Day
Our College Yearbook, Portal, is produced every year and shares with BBC and its wider community the achievements of our students. In each issue of Portal there is an annual report from the Library, acclaiming both the Middle School and Senior School achievements of the library year.
