Spotlight on Pipes and Drums

The countdown is on until fifty of our best pipers and drummers head to Scotland to perform live at Edinburgh Castle in the 2018 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and World Pipe Band Championships.

Before they leave some members of the band share their thoughts on the upcoming tour.

What instrument do you play?
Snare Drum

What year did you join the band?
2015, I was in Year 4

What have you most enjoyed about being part of the BBC Pipe Band?
It’s a terrific community which generates friendships across all age groups, I never feel like I’m the youngest

What has been your most memorable moment playing in the band to date?
My first ANZAC Day street march in 2016

What are you most looking forward to when travelling to Scotland with the band?
Spending five weeks away with my friends and playing the instrument I love. It’s a once in a lifetime experience

How have you and the band prepared for your performances overseas?
Afternoon practices and music lessons during the school week (Monday to Friday). Practices on Sunday as well. I also practice at home with my brother

What do you think will be the biggest challenge for members of the BBC Pipe Band while playing in Scotland?
Being away from home and trying to understand the Scottish accents! Playing every day as well as keeping up with school work will also be challenging

What are the major differences between your BBC Pipe Band uniform and your REMT kit?
The full tunic for REMT is hot and heavy which will be good for the cold weather in Scotland but not so good for Queensland

Drum Sergeant

What year did you join the band?
2011

What have you most enjoyed about being part of the BBC Pipe Band?
I've enjoyed all the opportunities to meet new people at BBC, in the Australian Pipe Band community as well as the international pipe band community

What has been your most memorable moment playing in the band to date?
The first Scotland Tour, when the band placed in the top six at the European Championships

What are you most looking forward to when travelling to Scotland with the band?
I'm looking forward to the Tattoo as well as playing and competing against some of the best bands in the world at the Scottish and World Pipe Band Championships

What are the major differences between your BBC Pipe Band uniform and your REMT kit?
For the drummers, the jackets are pretty different to play in. We've got to make sure our drumsticks don't get caught in the sleeves

Where would you like to see the band in 10 years?
I'm hoping the band will be the top school band in Australia, as well as one of the top school bands in the world.
