Veterans' Day at the College

Each year veterans return to the College to assist Year 10 History students with their 10 week in depth study of World War II. Students interview our veterans to gain a greater understanding of what life was like at BBC before the war, their war experience and what they did when they returned home. Vietnam veterans are now a welcome addition to the interview programme.

The interviews are held in the morning before the ANZAC Day Commemoration Service, allowing veterans the opportunity to attend the Service in the afternoon.

If any veteran would like to take part in the interviews, please contact Karen Martin.

We now have comprehensive lists of all Old Boys who served in both World Wars I and II and Vietnam, but would like to hear from anyone who has served in any other area of conflict.

Veterans from World War II, Vietnam, Iraq and East Timor attended this year's Veteran's Day at the College held on the 23 April. Year 10 History students interviewed the vets as part of their 10 week study on World War II. The students covered World War I in Year 9 and will study Vietnam, Iraq and East Timor in second term of this year.

Fighter Pilot Peter Weekes who has returned recently from Iraq, World War II RAAF veteran Bruce Wilson and AIF Lieutenant Joel Packer, a veteran from East Timor had a chat over lunch.

World War II diggers from l to r: Spencer Anderson, Don Astill and Alex Browne enjoy the BBC Veteran's Day and ANZAC Day Commemoration Service.
Vietnam veterans Gundy Manning and Don Moffat are regulars at Veteran's Day and enjoy catching up with each other yearly.

ANZAC Commemoration Service

Brisbane Boys' College holds an ANZAC Day Service each year to honour the 96 Old Boys who died in active service during World Wars I and II. The Service is held around the Memorial Swimming Pool at 2.15pm on the last school day before ANZAC Day. Old Boys and partners are always welcome to attend.

This year's ANZAC DAY Commemoration Service was held on Friday 23 April around the Memorial Swimming Pool. The BBC community including staff, students, parents, invited guests, Old Boys and relatives of the Fallen gathered to pay homage to the 96 Old Boys killed in action during World War I and World War II.

Eric Munro and Bob Schlencker return every year to the BBC ANZAC Day Service to remember their brothers who were killed in action during World War II.

Alan Bulloch, Ian Clarke and Chippy Morgan remember the friends who never returned home during World War II at the BBC ANZAC Commemoration Service.

Careers Expo

An important event in the Career Education programme at the College is its Careers Expo held each June, in conjunction with St Aidan's School.

On this night current students discuss their career paths with past students, parents and representatives from tertiary institutes.

Staff from the Universities, TAFE Institutes, Defence Forces, Hotel Management and many other education providers compliment the Old Collegians' and Parents' contributions.

For more information, contact Karen Martin.

Tear 12 Careers Day

It was back to school for twenty-one young professional Old Boys who took up the challenge to be involved in a Year 12 Careers Day. The College introduced this unique event into the curriculum to focus more attention on developing skills for career success when students leave the College.

The day focused specifically on developing employability skills for students including communication, decision making, prioritising and planning, handling change and teamwork. It involved a range of activities from solving puzzles, applying for jobs and attending mock interviews. The role of the young professional was to lead the students through the various learning scenarios.

Andrew Stephen (BBC 1988-1994) kept his group well focused on planning and prioritising their assigned tasks throughout the day.
Under the watchful eye of Lachlan Grantley (BBC 1988-1994), the team was mapping out its strategies and objectives.
Delegating tasks was an important part of the day and who better to lead his group through this process than Michael Finlayson (BBC 1981-1988), Managing Director of Finlayson Timbers.
Keeping them on track was role-model James Rogers (BBC 1984-1991).
