Men's Artistic Gymnastics - Apparatus

Floor
A series of tumbling acrobatic skills on a sprung 12 metre square. Skills can be acrobatic (running, jumping, etc) or static/strength (splits, handstand, balance, press, etc). This is a very spectacular apparatus at high levels.

Pommel
Derived from riding on horse back, pommel horse is comprised of swinging actions from the legs over and around the horse and handles. All actions are swung. There should be no pure strength elements.

Rings
Comprised of 2 rings of wood suspended above the ground by cables. All elements are either swung or of strength, performed beneath and above the rings.

Vault
Running and jumping. Low levels learn the technique of rebound and body position in flight and progress to aerial acrobatics. High levels jump from two feet off a spring-board and contact a vault horse only with their hands before landing on their feet.

Parallel bars
Swing and strength elements between the bars comprise these routines. Swings may be above or below the bars.

Horizontal bars
Definitely the most spectacular in any championship. Only swing elements may be performed under, over, or around the bar, with some changed of direction or hand grip. This apparatus is most remembered for its spectacular dismounts.

Training Attire
Training attire should not restrict movement of the gymnast. Therefore, long baggy clothes are not acceptable. Gymnasts need to be able to show their bodyline while training.

BBC gymnasts are required to wear BBC gymnastics t-shirt/singlet, house shirt or PE shirt with either BBC gymnastics or PE shorts.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

  • Please do not interfere in coaching matters and never give your child or the coach technical advice about gymnastics.
  • If you have a question, concern or complaint, please raise this with the coaching director.
  • Please support the staff in the enforcement of the rules and their coaching techniques. If you have any issues in this area, please discuss them with the coaching director.
  • Please do not enter the training area or office unless invited to do so by a coach.
  • Children who are not under the supervision of a coach must always be accompanied by an adult. Please try not to block the doorways and keep prams and strollers out of the training area. Please do not allow children to enter the training area at any time, or to jump into the pit or touch any other equipment. (These are for the use of gymnasts under supervision.)
  • Once your child enters the training area they are in the care and supervision of the coaching staff. Please refrain from speaking to your child or attracting their attention until they have been dismissed at the end of the class. You should not remove your child during class without first speaking to the coach.
  • If you cannot pick up your child at the end of class, please arrange for someone else to do so, and let the coaching director know the name of that person. (The gym will usually close immediately after classes finish, and we cannot guarantee that there will be someone to supervise your child.)

Please note:    Parents are always welcome to discuss their child’s progress or needs with their coach or the coaching director. Please feel free to ask questions or raise your concerns with the coaching staff.
