BBC Football History
From very humble beginnings in 1981, when a few BBC Soccerl teams (as it was called then) competed in a Round-Robin Tournament with some other Independent schools, BBC Football has grown enormously. In 2008, over 380 students from years 8 - 12 alone will play inter-school Football. Another 9 teams will compete in the CIC Competition in Year 5 - 7.
During the 1980s the ISSA (Independent Schools' Soccer Association) was formed, and BBC teams started competing on Saturdays, within the ISSA competition.
In 1989 'Football' was introduced as a 'trial' GPS sport. BBC won the First XI competition in that year. From 1991, Football has been a Premiership activity within the GPS sporting system; with all the Schools' involvement growing yearly. BBC were undefeated GPS Premiers in 1991.
BBC, in these last dozen years or so of 'official' competition, has always been a leading school. In 2001, a major function 'Football Turns 21' was held. It brought together many players, parents and staff members from the past that hae helped BBC Football's success.
2004 saw a professional Football coach become Director of Football for the first time. Although not all year round, Greg Brown was full time until the conclusion of the Football season, in September. 2004 will also be remembered as the year when BBC won the GPS premiership for the third time in its history.
For the first time in 2004 the College organised a UK Football trip which was a great success, and we will be looking to organise a similar trip this year in the 2008 September holidays. Contact Greg Brown for details.
Last year in 2007, BBC finished best overall on the GPS ladder. BBC had a 77% success rate with BGS coming second with 70% and with the 1st XI boys getting colours for a top three finish, it was a very successful year all together. |
