Introduction
The term 'spiritual' extends beyond the breadth of Christian Education. It is important to acknowledge that 'spiritual' development is a part of the totality of the life of the student. The way in which he responds to academic and co-curricular opportunities, as well as his response to discipline and community responsibility, are all vehicles in some way for his spiritual development. There is no doubt that God is interested in the development of student character in the everyday decisions of life.

Overall Goals
To introduce students to the value of:

  • a relationship with, and commitment to God through Jesus Christ
  • their spiritual and moral development in light of God's truth

These two overall goals will be achieved through:

  • fostering student consideration of their beliefs, values, goals and life purpose
  • teaching of the Christian good news and the purpose of Christ's life, death and resurrection
  • a creative, faithful and meaningful coverage of the Old and New Testaments
  • offering the opportunity for spiritual growth through involvement in voluntary Christian activities
  • an overall importance for students to belong to the College community and to fulfil the commitments which they make
  • the role model of staff being a positive Christian example to students

Program
Arising out of these sub-goals, the College has divided Christian activities into those which are compulsory and those which are voluntary. Both are of critical importance. There are foundational activities within the College which every student is involved in:

  • Christian Education and Life and Belief Issues classes
  • Year level and House Chapel services (once per term)
  • Assembly (5-10 minute segment at the beginning of each assembly twice weekly)

The Chaplain is responsible for the oversight of the Christian Education program which is resourced by six other members of staff. To further develop this team, the Chaplain facilitates an annual retreat, and staff meetings are held regularly. The retreat has provided a valuable opportunity for dealing with concerns and new teaching directions. The ministry team consists of Rev. Graham Cole, Mr Alan Cheel, Mr Matthew McEwen, Mr Matthew Smith, Miss Christine O'Gorman and Mr Steve Phillpotts.

Day school Chapel is conducted once a term by the Chaplain and Associate Chaplain, and they also lead a worship and preaching component at the commencement of each assembly on Monday and Friday. Junior School Chapel is conducted by the Chaplain or Associate Chaplain weekly.

During the year there are also many special services conducted, such as:

  • Staff Commencement Service
  • Boarders' Welcome Service
  • Founder's Day Service - this year our Centenary Service will be held in City Hall at 5.00pm on Sunday 10 February.
  • Annual Day House Chapels
  • Mothers' Day
  • Boarders' Services
  • Rowers' Service
  • Fathers' Day
  • Interschool Christian Fellowship Services
  • Nine Lessons and Carols

The Boarders participate in one compulsory service per week during term time. This is normally of a Sunday evening at 5.30pm. Twice a term, this compulsory service is conducted in the middle of the week, at night, due to a number of students taking weekend leave on a regular basis. It also provides the opportunity to have a different style of service twice a term. From time to time, services are conducted on a Sunday morning. Each year, annual visits take place to Toowong Uniting Church and Ann St Presbyterian Church. A voluntary chapel service is also conducted on a weekly basis after dinner.

Voluntary Christian Activities
As the very nature of the Christian faith is the free will response of people to the love, holiness and mercy of Christ, it is important that further opportunities are available where students can choose to experience teaching, belonging and ultimately exercising leadership within voluntary Christian groups.

The major voluntary groups that are active in the life of the College are:

  • Junior School Interschool Christian Fellowship run by Mr McEwen
  • Senior School Interschool Christian Fellowship run by Miss O'Gorman and Mr Phillpotts (leaders meet each Friday morning at 7.45am in the Chapel)
  • Boarders' voluntary Chapel conducted by Mr Matthew Smith and Rev Graham Cole
  • Weekly Wednesday morning voluntary service for staff and students conducted by members of the ministry team
  • Students facilitate a prayer meeting on a Tuesday morning before school
  • It is planned to start a Year 7 focus group run by Mr Alan Cheel, the Associate Chaplain

The Chaplain attends the Senior ISCF each week and is a regular visitor at the other activities. Social functions with sister Colleges are also organised by the ministry team on at least a once per term basis.

Christianity Explained

Mr Matthew Smith conducts a six week voluntary course called 'Christianity Explained', generally during Terms 3 and 4. This is conducted individually, or in groups. Sometimes it is used as preparation for confirmation. Other students and staff are also involved in the leadership process. A number of students have continued to meet after the six weeks to deepen their walk of faith in discipleship groups.

Discipleship Groups

Discipleship groups are planned for students in each grade of the Middle and Senior School. These will be facilitated by members of the ministry team.

Prayer and Support Group

The ISCF Support Group has fulfilled two main functions:

  • praying for the life of the College
  • assisting with cooking and serving social functions

Prayer support is specifically encouraged through the weekly parents prayer group that meets with the Chaplain. Near the beginning of each term a group of 20 staff and parents meet for a prayer and fellowship breakfast. A group of five staff meet for prayer each week prior to the start of the school day.

We recognise that prayer is a vital part of the College's life and therefore much thought is being given to the best ways of encouraging prayer ministry.
